Critical Lapse in Healthcare: No Surgeon Available for Emergency Surgery at District Hospital Anantnag

ANANTNAG, JULY 09 (STC): In a shocking case of medical negligence, a patient suffering from acute appendicitis was advised immediate surgery at District Hospital Anantnag but was left unattended due to the absence of a surgeon. The incident has raised serious concerns about the functioning of the healthcare system in the region.
Patient namely Sheikh Adil was brought to the hospital on Wednesday July 9th in severe pain and was diagnosed with acute appendicitis, a condition that requires urgent surgical intervention to prevent life-threatening complications. However, to the dismay of the patient’s family, they were informed that no surgeon was available at the hospital at the time.
“We were told that surgery was the only option to save him, yet not a single surgeon was present. We waited anxiously, but no one came. It was terrifying,” said a relative of the patient, visibly distressed.
In an attempt to seek immediate help, STC tried to contact the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, which oversees the District Hospital. Despite repeated calls, the Principal did not respond.
This appalling lapse has not only endangered the life of the patient but also highlighted the dire state of healthcare infrastructure in South Kashmir. Residents and activists have expressed outrage, demanding accountability and immediate action.
“This is not the first time patients in need of emergency care have been let down by the system. The absence of surgeons in a major district hospital is inexcusable,” said a local health rights activist.
While the current condition of the patient remains unknown, questions are being raised about how such a critical healthcare facility can operate without essential staff, particularly in emergency cases.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, calls are growing louder for a thorough investigation and urgent measures to prevent such lapses in the future.
