DATELINE: When Gen Z Turns Conversation into a Puzzle

When your child says something like – “It’s 6—7” – that sounds completely mysterious, don’t worry. It’s probably just Gen Z… being Gen Z.

The other day, I asked my son, Syed Muhammad Ibraheem, a simple question. I expected a simple answer. Instead, I got a response that sounded more like a secret code.

“It’s 6—7 mom,” he said casually.

I paused. For a moment, I wondered whether he was answering my question or solving a math problem. Naturally, I asked him what exactly “6—7” meant. His response was even more surprising.

“Mom, you’re a millennial… you won’t understand,” he said with a hint of confidence that only teenagers seem to possess these days.

I looked at him in disbelief. A millennial? Was that meant to be an explanation or a polite way of saying I was outdated?

Curiosity took over. I started asking more questions, hoping he would clarify what “6—7” meant in normal human language. But every question led to another mysterious reply.

“That’s just Gen Z language, Mom,” he explained, as if this statement alone was enough to settle the matter.

And just like that, the conversation ended with me staring at my phone, scrolling through the internet in search of answers.

The Generation Gap in Real Time

For many parents today, this situation may sound very familiar. Conversations with teenagers often feel like decoding a new language. Words and phrases that seem perfectly ordinary to them appear confusing to the rest of us.

My short conversation with Ibraheem felt like a crash course in the communication style of Generation Z—the generation that grew up surrounded by smartphones, social media, memes, and viral trends.

Their language is quick, playful, and sometimes intentionally confusing. What sounds like nonsense to older generations is often part of a shared cultural code among young people.

When Numbers Replace Words

Expressions like “6—7” (pronounced “six seven”) often don’t refer to numbers at all. The phrase, which exploded as a viral meme in 2025 from a Skrilla song and TikTok trends, has no fixed meaning—it’s deliberately absurd and nonsensical. Young people use it as a random interjection, filler word, or playful response to almost anything (sometimes vaguely implying “so-so” or just chaos). It’s less about a precise definition and more about the shared joke, the tone, and the fun of confusing older generations.

The internet has turned language into something flexible. A phrase can start as a joke on social media and suddenly become everyday slang for millions of young people.

To Gen Z, communication is fast and creative. To the rest of us, it sometimes feels like a riddle.

“Mom, You Won’t Understand”

Perhaps the most amusing part of the conversation was my son’s confidence in declaring that I wouldn’t understand because I belonged to a different generation.

It made me realize something important: language has always been a marker of identity. Young people naturally develop their own way of speaking to express independence and connect with their peers.

Years ago, older generations also had their slang and expressions that puzzled their parents. The difference today is the speed at which language evolves. Thanks to social media, a new phrase can spread across the world in hours.

Learning the Language of the Internet

After my brief encounter with Gen Z vocabulary, I did what many parents probably do—I started scrolling online, trying to decode the mystery.

From “no cap” and “sus” to “slay” and “rizz,” the internet is full of words that sound unfamiliar but carry specific meanings within Gen Z culture.

At first, it can feel like stepping into a completely different linguistic universe. But it is also fascinating to see how creativity and humor shape modern communication.

More Than Just Slang

Behind the jokes and strange expressions, Gen Z language reflects a deeper reality: the influence of technology on everyday life. Social media platforms encourage short, catchy phrases that are easy to remember and share.

Memes, videos, and online trends constantly introduce new words and expressions. What begins as a simple joke can become part of everyday conversation.

The Final Lesson

My short conversation with Syed Muhammad Ibraheem taught me something unexpected. The gap between generations is not just about age—it’s also about language.

While Gen Z may speak in codes like “6—7,” their creativity shows how language continues to evolve with every generation.

And perhaps the real lesson for parents like me is simple: when your child says something that sounds completely mysterious, don’t worry.

It’s probably just Gen Z… being Gen Z.
