FRIDAY SERMON: Hard Work is the Key to Success
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the Leader of the Prophets, Muhammad (SAW)

Hard work is the foundation of success in human life.
History proves that no individual or nation can achieve progress without dedication and effort. Those who adopt perseverance, determination, and continuous effort in their lives are the ones who ultimately reach the heights of success and honor.
Unfortunately, in the modern era many young people desire instant success. They expect a comfortable life, high income, and social status without putting in the necessary effort. Such a mindset often leads to disappointment, frustration, and failure.
Islam provides a comprehensive way of life that encourages human beings to work hard, strive for excellence, and earn their livelihood through lawful means. The teachings of the Quran and the sayings of the Prophet emphasize that a person should actively work and make efforts to achieve success.
Importance of Hard Work in the Quran
The Quran clearly teaches that success is linked with effort.
“And that man will have nothing except what he strives for.”
(Quran 53:39)
This verse clearly highlights that every individual receives according to the effort they make.
Another verse states that Allah has made the earth accessible for human beings so that they may walk through its paths and seek their sustenance. This indicates that human beings are required to move, explore, and work for their livelihood.
Teachings of the Prophet about Hard Work
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the dignity of earning through one’s own labor.
He said:
“No one has ever eaten better food than that which he earned by working with his own hands.”
This teaching highlights the value of self-earned livelihood.
Another saying states that the giving hand is better than the receiving hand. A person can only become a giver when he works hard and becomes self-sufficient.
Hard Work in the Lives of the Prophets
The Prophets of Allah set practical examples of hard work.
Prophet Adam (AS)worked in agriculture.
Prophet Noah (AS) built the ark with his own hands.
Prophet Davood (AS) worked with iron and made armor.
Prophet Moses (AS) worked as a shepherd for many years.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was involved in trade before prophethood and was known for his honesty and dedication.
These examples show that no lawful work is inferior.
No Work is Small
In society, some people consider certain jobs to be inferior. However, in reality no lawful work is small.
A farmer, laborer, teacher, trader, or doctor—all contribute to society in their own ways.
Islam teaches that dignity does not depend on the nature of the work but on honesty and lawful earning.
Hard Work and Self-Respect
A person who earns through hard work develops confidence and self-respect. Such a person lives with dignity in society.
On the other hand, those who unnecessarily depend on others gradually lose their sense of self-respect.
Hard work builds strength, independence, and character.
Negative Thinking
Human thinking plays a major role in success or failure.
Negative thinking makes a person believe that they are weak or incapable. When someone constantly tells themselves they cannot succeed, their mind starts accepting this belief.
This mindset limits a person’s potential.
Positive Thinking
Positive thinking empowers individuals to overcome difficulties.
People with a positive mindset treat challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
Islam also encourages hope and optimism. The Quran instructs believers not to lose hope in the mercy of God.
Principles for Youth
Youth are the most valuable asset of any society. If young people use their energy in the right direction, they can transform the destiny of a nation. Therefore, it is essential for them to adopt certain guiding principles in life.
- Value Time
Time is the most precious asset in human life. Those who waste their time lose valuable opportunities in life. Successful individuals plan their time carefully and strive to make every moment productive.
- Start Small
Many young people wait for big opportunities and ignore small beginnings. In reality, every great success starts with a small step. Therefore, youth should not hesitate to begin their journey with any lawful and meaningful work.
- Keep Learning
Learning and acquiring skills are fundamental to success. Those who continue learning throughout their lives keep progressing. Education is not limited to books; practical experiences also teach valuable lessons.
- Maintain Positive Thinking
Positive thinking gives individuals the courage to move forward despite challenges. Those with a positive mindset can turn failures into stepping stones for success.
- Do Not Fear Failure
Failure is a natural part of life. Successful people learn from their failures and try again with greater determination.
Hard Work and the Process of Learning
Hard work is not limited to physical effort; it also includes intellectual growth and continuous learning.
When a person acquires knowledge or develops a skill, they are actually investing in their future.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim man and woman.”
This highlights that the pursuit of knowledge is also a form of hard work and dedication.
Increasing Laziness Among Youth
In the modern world, young people have access to many conveniences. Technology and social media have made life easier, but they have also increased distractions and laziness.
Many young individuals waste their valuable time in unproductive activities. This trend negatively affects both personal development and societal progress.
Therefore, youth must utilize their energy in constructive and meaningful activities.
Relationship Between Hard Work and Patience
Hard work and patience go hand in hand. Without patience, people may lose hope quickly.
Success often requires long-term effort and persistence.
The Quran states:
“Indeed, Allah is with those who are patient.”
This verse teaches that those who work hard with patience ultimately achieve success.
Hard Work for the Hereafter
An important reality is that hard work is not only necessary for worldly success but also for success in the Hereafter.
Worldly life is temporary, while the life of the Hereafter is eternal.
If people can work tirelessly for worldly achievements, they should also strive for success in the Hereafter.
Performing prayers, observing fasting, giving charity, helping others, and maintaining good character are all forms of effort for eternal success.
For a Muslim, the ultimate goal is to attain Paradise, and Paradise requires faith, good deeds, and sincere effort.

Hard work is the key to success—both in this world and in the Hereafter.
Islam teaches a balanced approach to life, encouraging individuals to work for their worldly responsibilities while also preparing for the eternal life.
When people live with dedication, honesty, positive thinking, and devotion to God, they achieve success not only in this world but also in the life to come.
