FRIDAY SERMON: Truth — The Real Identity of a Human Being

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the Leader of the Prophets, Muhammad ( SAW).
Mohammad Younis Bhat (Zahid)
In the age we live in, truth has become rare and falsehood has become common. We are witnessing a time in which wrong is decorated as right and right is dismissed as outdated or weak. The value of sincerity and purity of character is gradually fading. Yet the reality remains unchanged: Truth is not what is merely spoken by the tongue — truth is what is lived through one’s character and actions. A human being is recognized not by his claims, but by the morals reflected in his conduct and dealings. Therefore, if truth lives within a person’s heart, it illuminates his life and strengthens his identity.
The Root of Moral Decline
In today’s society, love is decreasing while ego and self-interest are increasing.
Sacrifice is fading, and personal gain has become the motive behind most relationships.
Dignity and honor are measured not by piety and humanity, but by wealth, power, profession and outward appearance.
This moral decline did not occur overnight. One major cause is the weakening of moral and spiritual upbringing at home. Many parents are busy like machines in the pursuit of livelihood. While they fulfill the physical needs of their children, they often remain unaware of their emotional and ethical needs. Young people, not receiving timely guidance, seek it from society, media, peers, and social influence — where the loudest voice is often misleading.
Thus the space where truth should have grown has been taken over by falsehood.
The Status of Truth in Islam
Islam does not treat truth as a mere social value — Islam treats truth as a foundation of faith.
Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an:
“O you who believe! Stand firmly for justice and speak the truth, even if it is against yourselves.”
(Surah An-Nisa, 4:135)
This verse teaches that truth demands courage, and it may come at a personal cost — but it remains obligatory.
Allah further says:
“Surely, Allah is with those who are righteous and those who are truthful.”
(Surah An-Nahl, 16:128)
This means that a truthful person is never alone. Even if the world opposes him, Allah stands with him.
Prophetic Guidance on Truth and Falsehood
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Truth leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
In another Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned:
“Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to Hellfire.”
(Sahih Muslim)
These two statements present a map of human destiny:
Path of Truth Path of Falsehood
Truth → Goodness → Paradise
Lies → Wickedness → Hell
Thus, one’s destiny begins not from a grand action, but from the simple choice between truth and falsehood.
A Deep Lesson from the Analogy of Medicine
Medicine is beneficial — it has the power to heal.
Yet the same medicine can become harmful if:
taken at the wrong time,
in the wrong amount,
or for the wrong reason.
Then the cure itself becomes poison.
Similarly:
Education without character produces arrogance and manipulation.
Freedom without responsibility produces moral chaos.
Love without boundaries results in emotional destruction.
Truth misused or hidden becomes a tool of deception rather than righteousness.
So truth must not only be spoken — it must be protected, preserved, and practiced.
The Role of Family, Teachers, and Society
If a child grows up in a home where:
promises are kept,
respect is given,
honesty is lived and not just preached,
then truth becomes his nature.
But if a child sees:
contradiction between words and actions,
dishonesty in small matters,
hypocrisy in behavior,
then falsehood becomes normal to him.
Parents must not only teach truth, they must demonstrate it.
Teachers must not only educate minds, they must shape hearts.
Society must honor truth, not mock it.
If a home is truthful → the child becomes truthful.
If a community values truth → the nation becomes strong.
Why Many People Hide Truth Today
Today, many people avoid truth because:
They fear criticism
They fear losing status
They fear being isolated
They fear temporary loss of advantage
But they forget something crucial:
Falsehood gives temporary comfort.
Truth gives eternal peace.
A life lived in falsehood is like a house built on sand
It may look well decorated, but it collapses with the first storm.
Conclusion
Truth is not just a moral choice — it is the identity of a believer.
Where truth exists, Allah’s blessings, inner peace, and dignity are found.
Falsehood may offer momentary success, but it:
destroys the heart,
damages relationships,
stains character,
and leaves a person ashamed before Allah.
Real success is not in winning the world,
but in not losing your character, your faith, and your conscience.
Let us make a sincere commitment:
to speak the truth,
to live truth in our actions,
and to raise our children in the fragrance of truth.
Because truth is not just a word — it is the real identity of a human being.
And Allah knows best (STRAIGHT TALK COMMUNICATIONS EXCLUSIVE. makahmadina11@gmail.com)
