GCC delegation holds discussion with CS on Achaan landfill issue among others concerning citizens

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 31 (STC)
: A delegation of the Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC) headed by its Chairman Khurshid Ahmad Ganai held a meeting with Chief Secretary Atal Duloo on Thursday and discussed certain issues pertaining to common masses.
The delegation discussed Solid Waste Management policy currently in practices in cities and towns at length. Concerns on ACHHAN Landfill were raised in the discussion and professional expertise and previous expertise of the firm alloted the ontract also came up.
As per the statement of the GCC, the Commissioner SMC said NIT Srinagar had also technically appraised the bio remediation project .
The Chairman GCC was emphatic that the SMC would need to review their calculations which didn’t seem to be anywhere near real and take a hard look at whether , and to what extent , would this project be able to deal with the legacy waste in particular, reads the GCC statement.
The Commissioner SMC, as oer GCC statement, said the project is scheduled to start operation on 3rd November.
Meanwhile, other key takeaways of the meeting are detailed below:

  • GCC inputs on flood management will be duly factored in flood mitigation plans and practices in an approptiate manner . The Chief Secretary directed Chief Engineer I&FC to connect with Er SRS Madni and Er Iftikhar Drabu for further deliberation on their ideas and insights.
  • ⁠The GCC suggestions on ” removal of bottlenecks on city roads and for better traffic management issues will be examined in right earnest . The road connectivity issues GCC had raised in its meeting with CS on 7th Nov last year were also shared with the ACS ( PWD) who was present in the meeting with a request to expedite corrective action.
  • ⁠Protection of Lakes , Waterbodies & Wetlands was another major concern highlighted by GCC, bringing out the need for immediate interventions in ANCHAR and WULAR Lakes in particular.
  • ⁠In Health sector , GCC r forth the issue of grossly dilapidated building and other infrastructure at Maternity Hospital Anantanag , as also its inappropriate location .Besides, the need of putting the vacant GB Pant Hospital to proper and optimal use without further delay was also raised .It was given out by the Health Secretary Dr Abid Rashid that the Govt had already done a DPR on Maternity Hospital Anantnag while a project was being formulated in respect of GB Pant hospital.
    Notably, the GCC delegation included Ms Nasim Lankar, Latif-ul-Zaman Deva, SRS Madni, Kifayat Hussain, G.J.Nehvi, Ab Rashid Khan , Iftikhar A Drabu ,Ab Majid Butt, Hakim Iftikhar, Khaliq ul Zaman Butt , and Secretary GCC Mohammad Rafi.
