The death of 22-year-old Ajaz Ahmed Rather of Sultan Colony Kangan was not an accident but a murder planned by his own friends, confirms police today.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ganderbal, Muhammad Khalil Poswal, said that Ajaz Ahmed was strangled with a wire before his body was thrown into the Power Canal. Earlier, locals believed he had drowned.
According to police, Ajaz had been playing cricket with two acquaintances, Niyazul Haq and Moieen. A fight broke out. The two accused later bought a wire, which was caught on CCTV, and used it to kill him.
They then dumped his body in the canal.The wire has been recovered.
Police said clear strangulation marks were found on the victim’s neck. Forensic and scientific evidence will be used to build a strong case.
SSP Poswal said the case highlights the need for parents and society to monitor the behaviour of young people. Both accused are now in custody, and a murder case has been registered.
