J&K’s unemployment rate marginally down

J&K Economic Survey 2025 shows a fluctuating but overall positive trend.

SRINAGAR, MARCH 15 (STC): Refuting concerns over a sharp rise in unemployment, the government stated in the Legislative Assembly that the unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir has dropped from 6.7% in 2019-20 to 6.1% in 2023-24.
Presenting the figures in the Legislative Assembly’s 2nd Session, responding to a query by MLA Mubarak Gull on the employment scenario, the government stated that the
J&K Economic Survey 2025 shows a fluctuating but overall positive trend. The unemployment rate stood at 5.9% in 2020-21, 5.2% in 2021-22, and 4.4% in 2022-23 before slightly increasing to 6.1% in 2023-24.
Officials highlighted improvements in workforce participation, with the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) reaching 64.
3% and the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) at 60.4% in 2023-24, reflecting better employment opportunities. The government attributed these gains to targeted economic policies and initiatives.
To boost employment, the J&K Public Service Commission (JKPSC) and J&K Services Selection Board (JKSSB) have made 11,526 selections in the last two years. In 2023, 4,836 recruitments were made (1,141 by JKPSC and 3,695 by JKSSB), while in 2024, 6,690 selections were completed (1,034 by JKPSC and 5,656 by JKSSB). (STC)
