SRINAGAR, JANUARY 31 (STC): The Kashmir Advocates Association has approached the Supreme Court seeking establishment of a bar council for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, reports barandbench.com.
Currently, there is no bar council for J&K and lawyers take the membership of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association.
This is the second such petition filed before the top court.
The Court is already seized of a plea filed in 2022 Jammu-based advocate Supriya Pandita pointing out that currently there is no government-established body where lawyers from the region can get themselves enrolled and avail Bar Council benefits as in other States of the country, reads the report of Bar and Bench.
Notably, the Court had issued notice in that petition in July 2022.
Meanwhile, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta on Friday sought the responses of the Central government and the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court to the plea. (STC)
