SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 08 (STC): In a significant development on sports front, the Jammu and Kashmir government is contemplating a plan to host Indian Premier League (IPL) matches and other international events in Kashmir. For organising these premier events in the game of cricket, a new international cricket stadium and academy is being established in Budgam.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated this today while addressing a gathering in Budgam. He added that the government will continue to take steps for the region’s development.
“A new cricket stadium is to be built in Kashmir so that international and IPL matches can be held here. I don’t think there is a better place than Budgam for this project,” Omar said
The Chief Minister also highlighted several welfare measures taken by his government. He said free bus rides have been provided for women on government buses across routes from Budgam to Srinagar, Qazigund, Uri, and even Delhi.
Omar said the government has increased social welfare schemes for the first time in 15 years, including old-age, widow, and disability pensions, and financial assistance for poor women’s marriages after a gap of 16 years.
“We even removed the rule requiring an eighth-class qualification so that every eligible woman can receive assistance,” he said.
