MeT predicts heavy rains, snowfall in J&K from October 5 to 7

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 04 (STC): Widespread rainfall and snowfall from October 5 to 7 under the influence of an active western disturbance has been predicted for Jammu and Kashmir by the weatherman.
In its advisory, the Meteorological Department has cautioned that the spell may bring significant disruption to transport, farming activities, and pose risks of natural hazards in vulnerable areas.
“Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected over higher reaches including Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass. Middle reaches are likely to witness light snowfall, while plains across Kashmir are expected to receive moderate to heavy rain, reads the advisory issued by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar. For Jammu division the advisory forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall, coupled with thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds.
The peak of this weather system is likely to occur on the night of October 5 and continue until the morning of October 7. Winds with speeds between 40 and 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 to 70 kmph, may intensify the situation further.
The advisory highlighted probable impacts including disruption of surface transport, particularly along the Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh National Highways, as well as other major roads passing through middle and higher reaches of the Union Territory. The likelihood of moderate to severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at several locations has also been flagged.
Meanwhile, officials ave warned of increased chances of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones over vulnerable stretches, posing risks to commuters and transport operations. In addition, a rise in the water levels of rivers, streams, and nallahs is anticipated, raising the threat of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Farmers have been specifically advised to suspend all agricultural operations during the period from October 5 to 7, as the weather conditions may significantly affect standing crops and field activities.
