Srinagar, January 22 (STC): Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led Mutahida Majlis-E-Ulema (MMU) delegation has arrived in Delhi to exchange views on the contentious Waqaf (Amendment)Bill. The delegation will meet the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Friday at the residence of Jagdambika Pal, head of the JPC, reports local news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).
The MMU delegation comprises, Mufti Azam Nasir ul Islam, Molana Rehmatullah, Aga Syed Hassan, Movlana Hami, Movlana Masroor, Movlana AlKindi and others.
The leaders from Kargil and Ladakh are also part of MMU delegation.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has confirmed that they are meeting the Joint Parliamentary Committee to present their views on the Waqaf (Amendment)Bill, claims the news agency.
It’s worth mentioning Mirwaiz Umar Farooq earlier in September last year alleged that Waqf (Amendment) Bill threatens Muslims’ interests and had written to Jagdambika Pal, head of the JPC examining the proposed amendments, seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the issue.
In November MMU had once again reached out to Jagdambika Pal, chairman of the joint committee on Waqf Amendment Bill anticipating a positive response and hoped for an expedited meeting to ensure that the community’s perspectives are considered in revising the Waqf Act, 2024.
These amendments have sparked significant concerns and anxiety within the community due to their potential impact on religious, social and charitable institutions,” the MMU led by Mirwaiz had said in a statement.
The MMU emphasized the critical nature of these amendments, which could “undermine the autonomy and fundamental purpose” of Waqf properties.
