SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 08 (STC)
: National Conference Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has strongly criticized the detention of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA). He called it an act of repression rather than justice.
In a post on X, Aga Syed Ruhullah’s office said that while the use of abusive language by the legislator is condemnable, placing an elected representative under PSA is unjustifiable.
“Invoking the Public Safety Act (PSA) against MLA Mehraj Malik is unjustifiable. If an elected representative has erred, he must be questioned and dealt with under due process of law. That is how accountability works in a democracy,” Ruhullah wrote.
He added that the PSA, meant for exceptional cases of grave security threats, has been “misused repeatedly in Jammu & Kashmir to detain individuals on vague and arbitrary grounds.”
“Such misuse erodes public trust in institutions and reduces a legal safeguard into an instrument of suppression. We strongly condemn the use of abusive language by Mehraj Malik, but this is not justice; it is repression,” he asserted.
