SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 26 (STC): The amount of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr for the year 2026 has been set at Rs 80 per individual, announced the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, today. He advised the faithful to discharge the obligation before offering Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.
Notably, Zakat-ul-Fitr is mandatory upon every Muslim, irrespective of age or gender. Guardians are required to pay on behalf of minor children, while grown-up children must fulfil the obligation themselves. The Grand Mufti also pointed out that a husband cannot pay the charity for his wife without her approval.
He said the prescribed amount has been calculated on the basis of half a Sa’ of wheat, valued at approximately Rs 77, and rounded up to Rs 80 as a precautionary measure.
He added that those who are financially well-off may choose to give the charity in the form of wheat, cash, dates, raisins or other approved food items in place of the fixed cash amount.
Emphasising proper distribution, he said the charity must reach the poor, needy, orphans, deserving relatives and travellers within the local community. He made it clear that the funds should not be directed to mosques, khanqahs, or political and religious organisations.
