FRIDAY SERMON: Lack of Patience in Society

Muhammad Younis Bhat (Zahid)
In today’s fast-moving world, human temperament has changed dramatically. People want everything to happen immediately. Waiting, tolerance, calmness, and emotional stability are losing their place in our personal and social lives. This growing haste has led to disturbance, depression, frustration, and conflict within society. This condition is known as Lack of Patience or Weak Endurance.
Difference Between Patience and Sabr
Patience means to tolerate a difficulty with internal restlessness.
But Sabr is an act of faith — where one faces hardship with inner peace, trusting that Allah sees, knows and rewards.
The Value of Sabr in the Qur’an
“And be patient. Indeed, Allah is with those who are patient.”
(Surah Al-Anfal, 46)
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure.”
(Surah Az-Zumar, 10)
Sayings of the Prophet (PBUH)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Patience is a light.”
(Sahih Muslim)
He also said:
“Whoever tries to be patient, Allah will make him patient.”
(Sahih Bukhari)
These teachings show that patience is not just a moral value, but a source of spiritual strength.
Signs of Lack of Patience in Daily Life
- Traffic Behavior
On the roads, impatience is visible everywhere:
No respect for traffic signals
Unnecessary use of horns
Road rage and arguments
Rash driving
These habits lead to daily accidents, injuries, loss of lives, and continuous stress in society.
- Disrespect for Queue System
In banks, hospitals, shops, or any service place
People break the line, push ahead, and violate the right of others.
This attitude destroys social discipline and mutual respect.
- Marriage Ceremonies
At social gatherings: People are willing to wait 3-4 hours for meals,
but cannot stay 10 minutes for prayer or a religious reminder.
During Nikah ceremonies, listening to the sermon seems difficult,
but the same people have full-night patience for loud music and useless entertainment.
This is the moral decline caused by lack of patience.
- Addiction to Mobile Phones
People spend hours scrolling:
Social media
Reels
Chats
Games
Yet they do not have time to sit with their parents, respect their elders, or talk calmly with their family.
They have patience for the screen
but not for relationships.
- Friday Sermon
If the Friday sermon becomes even 5-10 minutes longer, annoyance begins —
but wasting hours in markets, gossip, or entertainment is considered normal.
The Rise of Suicides — A Dangerous Result of Impatience
Today, many people especially the youth are unable to endure failure or emotional pressure.
Examples we see daily:
A hardworking student gets low marks → result: suicide
Two young people fall in emotional love, face family disagreement → result: suicide
Small household arguments → result: suicide
A highly educated youth does not get a job → depression → suicide
This is not failure.
This is lack of patience + lack of guidance.
The Qur’an warns:
“Do not kill yourselves; surely Allah is Most Merciful to you.”
(Surah An-Nisa, 29)
Life is a test.
Failures are not the end.
They are a beginning of growth.
“Indeed, with hardship there is ease. Indeed, with hardship there is ease.”
(Surah Ash-Sharh, 5-6)
Youth must learn: Struggle is life, and life is precious.
The Patience of Prophet Ayyub (AS) — A Role Model of Endurance
Prophet Ayyub (AS) suffered:
Illness
Loneliness
Poverty
But he never complained.
His supplication was:
“Indeed, harm has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
(Surah Al-Anbiya, 83)
This teaches us: Patience beautifies the soul and strengthens the heart.
How to Reform Society (Cultural Revolution)
- Character education must be included in school and college curriculum.
- Friday sermons should emphasize moral discipline and tolerance.
- Public spaces, LED screens, and media should promote social ethics —
Not only films, political banners, and commercial ads. - Families must teach patience through example, not just words.
- Youth should be trained to handle failure, pressure, and emotional struggle.
Conclusion
Lack of patience is not just an individual weakness
It is a social illness that damages:
Families
Relationships
Education
Roads
Institutions
And the peace of society
To restore harmony, we must revive patience, wisdom, and emotional strength within our homes and hearts.
O Allah, make us among the patient.
O Allah, beautify our hearts with calmness, wisdom, and faith.
Aameen.
And Allah knows best
