SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 13 (STC): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ladakh by the end of this month to inaugurate important infrastructure projects and have direct interactions with the local population.
According to sources, during the Prime Minister’s visit, important infrastructure projects are likely to be inaugurated and direct interactions with the local population. Although the final schedule of the visit is still being worked out by the administration, officials say various major projects are nearing completion.
During the expected visit, the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate major infrastructure projects, including projects related to all-weather connectivity to border areas, telecommunications and civic amenities.
According to officials, improving roads and communication systems in border areas is among the government’s priorities, especially in remote areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), with emphasis on strengthening infrastructure to establish connectivity up to the last stage.
The Prime Minister’s possible visit could also assume significance in terms of the new political and constitutional arrangement of Ladakh. However, negotiations are still ongoing between Ladakh representatives and the Centre on the powers and final nature of the constitutional provisions of the proposed arrangements.
The Prime Minister’s possible visit could also include Chamor, a remote hamlet near the Line of Actual Control. The government is developing Ladakh’s first model border village under the Vibrant Villages programme here. Prime Minister Modi’s likely visit to Ladakh comes at a time when the Centre and the region’s representatives are negotiating a new political, administrative and constitutional framework for Ladakh.
Several confidence-building and development initiatives have also been taken by the Centre in recent months. The final programme and date of the visit are yet to be announced, however, if the Prime Minister’s visit goes as planned, issues related to the inauguration of infrastructure projects, border coordination, local governance and the constitutional and political future of Ladakh are likely to be important aspects of the visit.
