SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 15 (STC): Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said that sports are an important part of the police’s outreach and public relations programmes.

He said that channelizing the energy of youth towards constructive activities through sports is a central part of the police’s broader social responsibility and youth outreach efforts.
The police chief said that last year, 144 sports events were organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, while the recently organized ‘Run for Unity’ was attended by over 6,000 people. “in sports and policing, discipline, mutual coordination, teamwork, good performance under pressure, courage to face uncertainty and the ability to go beyond physical and mental limits to achieve one’s goals are of fundamental importance. Channeling the energy of youth through sports is an important part of the police’s youth outreach policy, especially in dealing with the menace of drug abuse and narco-terrorism,” he said.
The DGP said that to make the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan being run by the government sustainable and effective, it is necessary to continuously engage the youth with positive activities. He said that sports and other constructive activities can prove to be effective tools to counter the efforts of criminal networks and narco-terror networks to influence the youth.
He hoped that continuous contact with the youth and efforts to involve them in positive activities would further strengthen the ongoing measures against drugs and narco-terrorism.
Referring to historical civilizations, he said that besides ancient Rome, Egypt and Sparta, sports played a role in keeping the youth active and promoting social harmony in the Gupta and Maurya empires of India.
The DGP said that last year, 1789 children were taken to various places by the Jammu and Kashmir Police under the ‘Bharat Darshan’ program, while this year a target has been set to take 2,000 children on Bharat Darshan. He said that such programs not only expose children and youth to different regions, cultures and development activities of the country, but also help in instilling a broader national consciousness in them.
The police chief said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police also has a strong sports contingent in the form of the Central Sports Team, which is part of the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police. He said that police sportspersons are bringing glory to Jammu and Kashmir by continuously winning medals in various national and international level sports competitions.
