SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 31 (STC): National Conference MP Agha Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday reiterated his decision to resign from the party’s primary membership as well as from the Lok Sabha on November 3. He said that his decision was not a result of any personal resentment or lack of office but was part of his struggle against the failure to fulfill the principles and promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir during the elections.
Speaking to reporters in Budgam, Ruhullah said that he had already announced his resignation and would now implement the decision on November 3. He said that a public meeting in this regard would be held at Behesht-e-Zahra Park near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Budgam.
He said that November 3 is also the death anniversary of his father Shaheed Agha Syed Mehdi and he will implement his political decision on the same day.
Clarifying his stand on the alleged attempts to destabilize the elected government and speculations regarding horse trading, Ruhullah said that he is neither in favor of horse trading nor does he want to be a part of any such political activity. He said that the current National Conference government should be given a chance to complete its five-year term and no attempt should be made to topple any elected government through horse trading.
He said that the basis of his differences with the party leadership is the promises made to the people during the elections, which include important issues like restoration of Article 370, protection of constitutional rights, reservation-related issues and release of prisoners. He said that it is his democratic and principled stand to question the performance of the party leadership regarding the implementation of the promises made to the people by the National Conference during the elections.
He also raised questions about the political stance of the party leadership, referring to the statements of National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah regarding Article 370. He said that if the party leadership is no longer ready to struggle for Article 370 and the constitutional rights of Jammu and Kashmir, then why should they continue to be members of Parliament on the party’s election symbol. Talking about the possible political consequences of his decision to resign, he said that he is ready to face all the consequences of this decision. If the people support his principled stance, then in the future he may once again get the opportunity to represent the people through the parliamentary platform.
Agha Rohullah also appealed to all those people of Jammu and Kashmir who believe in principled politics, transparency and political accountability to attend the public meeting to be held on November 3.
