SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 05 (STC): Urging the youth to cooperate with the police to eradicate drug trafficking, cyber crimes and other social evils, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone Sujit Kumar assured that the identity of those providing information about drug trafficking or other illegal activities will be kept completely confidential. He said the information providers would be provided all possible cooperation by the police. Addressing his first press conference at the Police Control Room Srinagar after assuming the charge of IGP Kashmir, Sujit Kumar said that the police is intensifying operations against drug networks, cyber fraud and violations of traffic rules. Special attention is also being paid to incidents of reckless motorcycle riding by the youth.
Addressing the youth, the IGP said that the police stands with them and the entire team of Kashmir Zone Police will fully support them in this fight. He said that the youth should come forward and play a positive role in the ongoing efforts against drugs and cybercrime.
Presenting statistics regarding the anti-drug campaign, the IGP said that this year the police have registered more than 1500 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, while about 2000 people have been arrested in this regard. He said that during the operations against drug-related activities, about Rs 11 million in cash has also been recovered, while properties worth crores of rupees have been attached and confiscated. In addition, 567 bank accounts linked to the illegal drug business have been frozen, in which there was an amount of about Rs 13.1 million.
IGP Sujit Kumar said that the police are not only taking action against those involved in the supply and sale of drugs but are also targeting the financial networks behind this illegal business. In this regard, action has been taken against drug dealers, suppliers and their associates active in the downtown areas of Srinagar.
He appealed to the public to provide any information related to the sale, purchase or smuggling of drugs in their areas to the police. He assured that the identity of the informers would be kept confidential and they would not face any kind of trouble.
The IGP said that if a person is suffering from drug addiction and approaches the police station or rehabilitation center for treatment or help, the police will provide him with all possible guidance and support.
He urged the youth to seek help instead of remaining silent to get rid of drug addiction, as the youth are the future of the society and they should not destroy their lives due to drugs.
Expressing concern over the increasing incidents of cybercrime, the IGP warned the youth not to become part of organized online fraud networks. He specifically warned against the use of bank accounts that are used by cyber fraudsters to transfer money obtained through fraud. Such accounts are commonly called ‘mobile bank accounts’.
He said that cyber criminals sometimes use the bank accounts of the youth by giving financial lures, through which the money obtained through fraud is transferred to different accounts. The youth should stay away from such illegal networks completely.
He said that according to the complaints received by the police in recent cyber fraud cases, the victims have suffered a total financial loss of more than Rs 54 crore. However, due to the efforts of the police, about 13 to 14 percent of the amount that was defrauded has been recovered and more than Rs 7 crore has been returned to the victims.
He appealed that the youth should not be part of any group or activity that is involved in defrauding people online and robbing them of their hard-earned money.
Expressing concern over incidents of speeding, reckless driving and dangerous motorcycle riding by the youth, the IGP appealed to the youth to strictly adhere to traffic rules. He said that reckless driving on the roads can pose a threat to the lives of not only the driver but also the pedestrians and other passengers.
