JK Solar Association raises alarm over unregulated vendors

Don’t get misled by false promises such as “zero electricity bills” without proper system understanding or usage.

SRINAGAR, APRIL 10 (STC): Calling solar energy a long-term investment rather than a short-term business, the JK Solar Association in a press conference held here today at Press Club of Kashmir has urged the public to choose registered and experienced vendors, understand system capacity before installation, and avoid falling prey to misleading claims.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to spreading accurate awareness, guiding consumers, and ensuring quality installations while safeguarding public interest.
The media was also urged to play an active role in disseminating correct information and raising awareness among the general public.
The Association highlighted key issues in the solar energy sector and to create mass awareness about on-grid solar systems, the Government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, and the growing challenges faced by consumers due to unprofessional vendors.
The Association emphasized that an on-grid solar system, when used properly, can significantly reduce electricity bills. The system generates power during the day, supplies electricity to households first, and exports excess energy to the grid under net metering, ensuring bill adjustments for consumers.
The Association stressed the importance of proper usage, advising consumers to operate heavy appliances during daytime hours to maximize solar benefits. It also clarified realistic power generation expectations, stating that a 3 kW system produces around 10–12 units per day, while a 5 kW system generates approximately 18–22 units, depending on sunlight conditions in Jammu & Kashmir.
Highlighting the benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Association noted that the scheme aims to reduce household electricity expenses through government subsidies while promoting clean and renewable energy.
However, serious concerns were raised over the increasing presence of inexperienced and temporary vendors in the market. The Association warned that many consumers are being misled by false promises such as “zero electricity bills” without proper system understanding or usage. Poor installation quality and lack of after-sales service were also identified as major issues.
