India, China hold talks on border dispute

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 07 (STC):- India and China held fresh talks on managing their disputed border amid a gradual improvement in bilateral ties, reports appearing in cross section of media said. New Delhi also pressed Beijing to share technical details about upstream projects as concerns persist over China’s planned mega-dam on the Brahmaputra river, reports said.
“Maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement issued today .
According to the reports, both sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control and discussed boundary delimitation, border management, institutional mechanisms and trans-border cooperation
The statement came after the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs was held in New Delhi on Thursday.
New Delhi has raised concerns over Beijing’s plan to build what would be the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo river in Tibet, known as the Brahmaputra in India. China has said the project will not adversely affect downstream countries.
Both countries agreed to continue using diplomatic and military channels, including the WMCC and local commander-level meetings, to resolve outstanding issues and avoid misunderstandings and miscalculations along the LAC.
India also called for an early meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on trans-border rivers and emphasised the importance of China sharing technical details about its upstream projects.
