SRINAGAR, JULY 26 (STC): Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed deep anguish over the loss of civilian and police lives in the ongoing unrest across the Line of Control (LoC), reports local news agency KNS. He has urged the Government of Pakistan, local authorities and protesters to resolve differences through dialogue and restore peace, the report said.
In a post on X, the Mirwaiz said he was “deeply saddened and pained” by reports of deaths in the continuing unrest, particularly in Rawalakot and Poonch.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and all those affected by these tragic events,” he said.
The Mirwaiz also voiced concern over discussions regarding the representation and constitutional and political status of Kashmiri state subjects residing in Pakistan, saying issues related to identity, representation and political rights require “sensitivity, dialogue and broad public confidence”.
He said the legitimacy of any system of governance ultimately rests on the consent, trust and confidence of the people it serves.
Referring to the historical and familial ties across the LoC, the Mirwaiz said developments in one part of Jammu and Kashmir deeply affect people in the other, as well as the Kashmiri diaspora.
He also recalled his family’s longstanding association with the social, educational, religious and political development of communities across Jammu and Kashmir, including those on the other side of the LoC.
The Mirwaiz appealed to the Government of Pakistan and the local administration there to prioritise dialogue, restraint and engagement, and resolve differences through consultation rather than confrontation, while ensuring respect for human rights and the sanctity of human life.
He also urged the protesting parties to act with wisdom and responsibility and work towards restoring peace and public confidence at the earliest.
“I pray for lasting peace and stability for all the people of Jammu and Kashmir on both sides of the LOC,” he said.
