Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly may witness ruckus on CM’s statehood resolution on Monday

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 27 (STC): The resolution moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will be debated on Monday, during which the session is likely to be turbulent.
Multiple News reports state that there is a possibility of ruckus once again in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday, where the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is opposing the resolution moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah demanding immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Notably, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had moved the resolution regarding restoration of statehood in the Assembly on Friday, immediately after which BJP members protested strongly and ruckus started in the House. Due to the situation, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather adjourned the proceedings for the day.
The resolution demands the Government of India to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir immediately and on priority basis. The resolution also refers to previous resolutions passed by the assembly on June 26, 2000 and November 6, 2024. Reacting to the BJP’s protest, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the current resolution is not seeking a vote from the assembly on Article 370 or on the issue of special status or autonomy. According to Omar Abdullah, the resolutions passed in 2000 and 2024 are already part of the assembly’s record and the new resolution is not intended to repeal or replace these resolutions.
He said that the current resolution is only intended to seek the opinion of the house on the demand for restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister said that if the BJP has any objection to any “anti-national” or unconstitutional language in the resolution, it should point it out. He also expressed the view that Jammu and Kashmir should be given full statehood, not a limited statehood in which important powers are with the Centre. Omar Abdullah also alleged that BJP members are trying to avoid voting on the resolution through ruckus. According to him, the purpose of the current resolution is to give the House an opportunity to take a clear stand on the issue of restoration of statehood. Omar Abdullah said that the reference to these two previous resolutions has been made in the new resolution only to make it clear that the new resolution is not replacing or abolishing them. BJP members have objected to the references to the 2000 autonomy resolution and the 2024 special status resolution in the current resolution. Opposition Leader Sunil Sharma said that the BJP has rejected the 2000 autonomy resolution and making it a topic again in the current assembly is not acceptable to his party. He objected to the current resolution and said that the BJP will not allow a discussion on Article 370, autonomy or any other issue of this nature. After the House was adjourned after strong protests on Friday, the focus is now on the discussion and possible action on the resolution in the Assembly on Monday. The main reason for the current political disagreement is that the ruling coalition is limiting the resolution only to the restoration of statehood, while the BJP is opposing it, considering the references to previous resolutions on autonomy and special status as important.
During Friday’s proceedings, the House was adjourned ahead of schedule after intense sloganeering and protests between government and opposition members.
