Srinagar January 13 (STC): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, Ganderbal district, a significant infrastructure project to revolutionise road connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Prime Minister in his address on the occasion highlighted the government’s commitment to fulfilling promises and ensuring development in the region.
“The demand for the old one has been fulfilled today. And you should believe me, this is Modi. He keeps his promises,” he remarked, highlighting the completion of the project as a testament to his administration’s dedication.
PM Modi noted the strategic and socio-economic importance of the Z-Morh Tunnel, which will ensure all-weather connectivity to Sonmarg and significantly ease travel for the people of Kargil and Ladakh.
“Every work has a time, and at the right time, the right work happens,” he said and further stated that this tunnel is not just an infrastructural achievement but a step toward improving the lives of people in the region.
Remarkably, the Z-Morh Tunnel is considered a crucial precursor to the Zojila Tunnel, currently under construction. This tunnel is going to be Asia’s longest tunnel, spanning 13.14 kilometers, and being built at an estimated cost of Rs 6,800 crore. It will connect Ganderbal in Kashmir to Drass in Kargil.
It’s notable that the Zojila Tunnel will considerably cut travel time between Ganderbal and Kargil from three hours to just 20 minutes.( STC)
