SRINAGAR, AUGUST 08 (STC): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday launched the second revised edition of renowned cardiologist Dr Upendra Kaul’s book, ‘When the Heart Speaks: A Memoir of a Cardiologist’, at Radisson Collection Hotel & Spa, Riverfront, Srinagar. Omar Abdullah, who was chief guest on the occasion, said the book goes beyond Dr Kaul’s professional journey to capture his experiences, struggles, and commitment to society.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Omar Abdullah said, “The memoir is much more than an account of a medical career as Dr Kaul had brought together different facets of his life, including his experiences in the medical profession, travels, and deep attachment to his homeland.”
He said ‘When the Heart Speaks’ is a love letter to a land he holds dear. It is an account of life’s struggles and how to overcome them. It is also an effort to shine a light on some of the practices that go on in the medical profession.
Praising the author, Omar Abdullah said an honest autobiography requires the writer to accept that some people may not be pleased with what is written.
“Our lives are not sanitised and disinfected. Our lives are the experiences that come together that result in a book like When the Heart Speaks,” he said.
He also highlighted Dr Kaul’s contribution to healthcare. “Gauri Kaul Foundation established by Dr Kaul in memory of his late mother reflects both his gratitude towards his mother and his commitment to helping people access treatment they might otherwise be unable to afford. For everything that Prof Kaul has done as a surgeon, as a cardiologist, as a doctor, but perhaps more than that for everything that he has done as a human being in wanting to help people, we are grateful,” Omar said.
“I hope that the third edition of the memoir would follow with more stories, anecdotes, and experiences,” he said.
“If I was to ever write a book, it would be written and published after my death so that I don’t have to worry about whether I upset anybody and how many people I will have to apologise after that book has been published,” the CM said in his concluding remarks on the occasion.
Notably, National Conference MP, Mian Altaf was Guest of Honour on the occasion. He praised Dr. U Kaul for his immense professional capabilities in his field of cardiology profession and also also an author.
Amita Kaul, daughter of Dr. U Kaul, presented a detailed life account of the author. Eminent people from all walks of life were present on the occasion.
