SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 25 (STC): Disagreeing with National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s statement on Kashmir, former J&K Chief Minister abd Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that he respects Farooq Abdullah, however, his statement that Pakistan kept the Kashmir issue alive and there is no hope from Delhi is completely wrong. While talking to media persons in Jammu, Ghulam Nabi Azad alleged that Pakistan has been responsible for violence and instability in Jammu and Kashmir since 1947. He said that various central governments of India have taken steps for the development of Jammu and Kashmir from time to time and have played their role in building infrastructure in the region.
“I respect Farooq Sahib, but his statement is completely wrong,” said Ghulam Nabi Azad and claimed that Pakistan has continuously tried to spread terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and occupy some parts of the region.
Referring to the situation in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK), the former chief minister claimed that the people there want independence from Pakistan and want to join India. He said that attention also needs to be paid to the situation of the people in PoK and the events taking place there.
Referring to the effects of the long-standing violence in Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad accused Pakistan of affecting thousands of families due to terrorism. He referred to the killing of youth, women losing their husbands and Kashmiri Pandits and Muslim families displaced during the militancy.
He said that people have suffered heavy casualties and social losses as a result of the violence in the region.
He also defended the role of various central governments of India in developing infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. He cited roads, tunnels, four-lane highways and railway connectivity to Kashmir as examples of development in the region. He said that central governments have worked for the development of Jammu and Kashmir in these various periods.
