SRINAGAR, JULY 07 (STC): Following the issue of controversial books provided in government schools, the School Education Department Jammu has directed all government and private schools and coaching centres to conduct a comprehensive review of all books available in their institutions to ensure that no publication contains objectionable or inappropriate content.
According to a circular issued by the Director School Education Jammu on July 6, all institutional heads have been directed to check all new and old books available in classrooms, libraries, staff rooms, offices and other places. The circular said that the objective of the review is to ensure that no book contains any objectionable or inappropriate content. It should not contain content that is against the values or norms. It has also been made mandatory for all study materials to be in accordance with the guidelines of the National Education Policy 2020 and the age of the students.
According to the guidelines, if objectionable content is found in a book, a detailed report should be prepared, in which the title of the book, author, publisher and number of copies available should be recorded.
All government and private educational institutions and coaching centers have been instructed to complete this process within seven days and submit a compliance certificate to the concerned Zonal Education Officer by July 13. If any book contains objectionable content, a complete report of the same should also be submitted along with a certificate. According to the circular, the Zonal Education Officers will compile all the reports and send them to the concerned Chief Education Officers by July 15, while the combined report of all the districts will be submitted to the Directorate of School Education, Jammu by July 17.
