NCRB data 4,977 kg of drugs seized in J&K in 2024, convictions rise

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 11 (STC): Jammu and Kashmir recorded 4,977.21 kg of drug seizures in 2024, while 1,550 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, with 227 convictions and a conviction rate of 51.2 per cent, according to the latest NCRB data cited by the Union Government in the Lok Sabha.
The details were provided by Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, in a written reply to M K Raghavan and Adv Adoor Prakash.
As per the reply, J&K recorded 17,192.409 kg of drug seizures in 2022, which declined to 11,358.528 kg in 2023 and further to 4,977.21 kg in 2024. The number of seizure cases stood at 300,776 in 2022, 158,776 in 2023 and 134,699 in 2024.
The data further shows that 1,837 NDPS cases were registered in J&K in 2022, with 99 convictions and a conviction rate of 41.3 per cent.
In 2023, 2,232 cases were registered, with 195 convictions and a conviction rate of 53 per cent.
In 2024, the number of cases declined to 1,550, while convictions increased to 227, with the conviction rate standing at 51.2 per cent.
The Centre said the latest NCRB data pertains to 2024 and covers State/UT-wise drug seizures, cases registered, convictions and conviction rates under the NDPS Act for the period 2022-24. The data is collected from States and UTs and duly validated and certified by the concerned authorities before publication.
The figures show that while the quantity of drugs seized in J&K declined considerably over the three-year period, the number of convictions increased from 99 in 2022 to 227 in 2024, according to the NCRB data.
The reply also shows that 4,977.21 kg of drugs were seized in J&K in 2024 along with 552.800 litres of drug-related substances.
The information was furnished by the Ministry of Home Affairs in response to the Lok Sabha question concerning anti-narcotics campaigns and drives.
