Nepal: When Disaster Came Down from the Mountains, Where Could It Strike Next?

A crisis that begins in the mountains does not end in the mountains; the water eventually comes down.

The tragedy caused by devastating roaring flash floods in Nepal cannot simply be dismissed as another flood. Rather, it should be viewed as a serious warning for the entire Hindu Kush Himalayan region. What occurred near the Nepal–Tibet border on 26 August 2026 has shocked the world.
According to preliminary scientific assessments, a large mass of glacier, snow and rock broke away at an altitude of around 5,200 metres, with debris descending approximately 1,200 metres and temporarily obstructing the course of the Lhende River. As water accumulated and the natural barrier eventually gave way, a powerful surge of water, ice, mud and rocks swept towards downstream settlements, causing widespread destruction.
The gravity of the incident is heightened by the fact that there was no exceptionally intense rainfall at the time that could, in conventional terms, be identified as the sole cause of the disaster. In the era of climate change, it is no longer enough to monitor only clouds and rainfall; glaciers, glacial lakes and unstable mountain slopes must also be continuously monitored.
The full extent of the human and economic losses is still difficult to determine. The loss of lives, missing persons and destruction of roads, bridges, homes and other infrastructure have created a major humanitarian crisis. I express heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the affected families and urge the international community to extend all possible support to ongoing relief and rescue efforts.
This Is More Than a Flood: A Growing Glacial Threat
Understanding this type of disaster requires understanding the danger posed by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). As glaciers melt and retreat, new lakes can form in mountainous areas or existing glacial lakes can expand. Some of these lakes are held back by relatively fragile natural barriers made of earth, ice and rock. If a large mass of snow or rock falls into such a lake, or if its natural barrier becomes unstable, the barrier can collapse and send a destructive surge of water downstream within a very short period. Such events are known as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
According to research by ICIMOD, the rate of glacier ice loss across the Hindu Kush Himalaya has increased alarmingly over recent decades. Thousands of glacial lakes have been identified across the region, with a number classified as potentially dangerous.
It’s to be noted that the August 2024 glacial lake outburst flood in Thame village, Nepal, demonstrated that this is not merely a theoretical scientific concern but a real and growing threat. The disaster damaged homes and public infrastructure and highlighted the vulnerability of mountain communities.
India and Pakistan Are Not Beyond the Risk
The tragedy in Nepal should also serve as a clear warning for India and Pakistan, as both countries contain vulnerable Himalayan and Hindu Kush mountain regions.
Let me point it out to Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on the Indian side, and Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral and other northern mountainous regions of Pakistan, where glaciers, glacial lakes and unstable mountain slopes coexist with densely settled valleys and communities.
Pakistan has already experienced GLOF events in the past, while communities across the wider Himalayan region remain exposed to similar risks. Therefore, governments must take preventive measures rather than wait for another major disaster to occur.
The governments and relevant institutions are urged to make the continuous monitoring of potentially dangerous glacial lakes, modern early-warning systems, emergency evacuation plans and disaster-preparedness training for mountain communities a national and regional priority.
Climate Justice Cannot Be Ignored
The countries such as Nepal, India and Pakistan are not among the world’s largest historical contributors to global carbon emissions, yet their vulnerable mountain communities are increasingly exposed to the consequences of a warming climate. While parts of the world have gained enormous economic benefits from industrial development and decades of fossil-fuel use, the cost of a warming planet is increasingly being borne by communities that have contributed far less to global emissions—through the loss of homes, livelihoods, infrastructure and human lives.
This is at the heart of the issue of climate injustice, which the international community must address with seriousness and urgency.
The global media and world powers should not limit the climate crisis to a few days of headlines and dramatic images. Instead, greater attention must be given to its underlying causes, responsibilities and long-term consequences.
A Crisis Born in the Mountains Does Not End There
The tragedy in Nepal should teach the world that preparedness, scientific monitoring, early warning and regional cooperation are just as important as relief efforts after a disaster. It bears a question mark how adequately the millions of people living below the mountains are being protected if glaciers, ice, glacial lakes and mountain slopes are undergoing rapid changes. The Nepal disaster is not merely a Nepalese tragedy but a warning for all communities living across the Himalayan region.
The international community is urged to ensure practical measures, financial assistance, modern technology and effective early-warning systems for vulnerable countries and mountain communities affected by climate change, so that future disasters can be anticipated and lives protected before tragedy strikes.
