SUNDAY BYTES: The Poison in Our Plastic Bottles

Beyond the Label: Who Can Assure the Safety of Citizens?

Are plastic bottles putting our health at risk? This question always baffles me whenever I am to take water from a plastic bottle. It was a wedding in Srinagar; the kind of lavish affair Kashmir is known for. Tables groaning with food, families reunited, laughter filling the air. And on every table, row after row of plastic water bottles. We Kashmiris never used to drink bottled water. We had our springs, our taps, our “naag” spring water. Now, it’s everywhere. And with Kashmir’s temperatures soaring, those crates of bottles sit in the sun for hours, sometimes days, before they reach us. Who can assure me that what I am drinking is safe?
A Silent Epidemic: Kashmir is witnessing a concerning rise in heart attacks and cancers, even among the young. As a surgical oncologist, I see it every day. We search for genetic causes, lifestyle factors, air pollution. But are we overlooking something right under our noses? Something we drink daily? Microplastics have been detected in bottled water at alarming levels. Research shows a single litre from a plastic bottle can contain up to two to three lakh microplastic particles. A 2024 US study detected tens of thousands of plastic particles per litre in some products. And studies in animals and human cells suggest microplastic exposure could be linked to cancer, heart attacks, reproductive problems and a host of other harms.
Even more disturbing is that cardiologists studying heart blocks have discovered that arteries were composed not just of fat but of various plastic materials, including PET — the same plastic used in bottles. Around fifty per cent of heart blocks were found to contain plastics. The science is emerging but troubling. Microplastics act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormones. They trigger oxidative stress and immune dysregulation. They can cause DNA damage and promote carcinogenesis. They have been linked to respiratory diseases, reproductive issues, neurotoxicity, and carcinogenicity. These are not distant theoretical risks. These are happening now, inside our bodies.
Heat Accelerates the Poison: Here is what frightens me most. Plastic bottles degrade faster with heat and UV exposure. A study found that bottles stored under thermal and sunlight stress released up to 10.03 parts per million of microplastics within 28 days. In contrast, bottles stored in cool, dark places shed little to no microplastics. Now think about Kashmir. Our summers have become brutal. Those crates of bottled water sit in the back of trucks, on sun-baked platforms, in unshaded storerooms. By the time the bottle reaches your hand at a wedding, it may have been cooking for weeks.I am told a PPM meter can measure safety. It cannot. PPM meters measure total dissolved solids — minerals, salts. They do not detect microplastics. The plastic you are tasting is real. It is in the water. And it is entering your body.
Who Is Watching? The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has classified packaged drinking water as a “high-risk food category”. Manufacturers must undergo inspection at least once a year. Testing is required once every six months from accredited labs. Monthly testing is mandated for microbial contaminants. This sounds reassuring. But the reality is different. In Kashmir, two packaged water brands were recently banned — one sample found E. coli and coliform bacteria, another contained arsenic. If bacterial contamination and arsenic can slip through, what about microplastics, which are not even routinely tested?What about storage? Transport? Do regulators check how shopkeepers store these bottles in the blazing sun? Are they monitoring the supply chain from factory to function? The public deserves answers.
The Tap Water Problem: Clean drinking water is human right. Some will say: drink tap water. I understand. But in Kashmir, tap water after standing for a few hours develops a greenish hue. Our RO filters collect total mud every three months. We have a water infrastructure problem. Bottled water became popular because we lost faith in what comes from our taps. But we have traded one poison for another.
What We Must Demands: First, regulation must match the reality of microplastic contamination. FSSAI’s current testing regime focuses on microbial and chemical parameters. Microplastics are not a standard tested parameter in routine compliance checks. This must change. Second, storage and transport must be regulated. Bottled water should not be stored in direct sunlight or high temperatures. Shopkeepers must be held accountable. Crates left baking in the sun should be confiscated. Third, labelling must include batch numbers and storage guidelines so consumers know when the water was bottled and how it should be stored.Fourth, we need public awareness campaigns. Not to sell bottled water — to warn against its overuse. The assumption that bottled water is purer or safer than tap water is widespread and largely wrong. In most countries, tap water faces more rigorous regulatory scrutiny than bottled water.
Safety Before Charity: With the scorching heat, I thought of buying a crate of bottled water and placing it at a nearby mosque or hospital entrance so thirsty people could drink freely—a simple act of sadaqah.Then my family asked a question that made me pause:”Are you sure those plastic bottles are safe? What if they have been exposed to excessive heat or stored improperly?”It was a fair concern. Charity should never come at the cost of someone’s health. Safety first, sadaqah next. Before we distribute bottled water, we should ensure it has been stored and transported properly. Good intentions alone are not enough; responsibility must accompany generosity.Perhaps this summer, let us be both compassionate and wise—offering help that is not only heartfelt but also safe.Because the best charity is charity that brings benefit, not unintended harm.
What You Can Do? Avoid plastic bottles whenever possible. Use stainless steel or glass reusable bottles. Do not drink water from bottles that have been stored in heat or sunlight. Do not reuse single-use plastic bottles — they shed more particles with each use.If you must buy bottled water, check the manufacturing date. Fresher is safer. Store it in a cool, dark place. And if you taste plastic, trust your senses. That is not your imagination. That is poison.
A Question for the Authorities:Kashmir’s young people are falling ill. Heart attacks at forty. Cancer at thirty. We search for explanations. Meanwhile, we drink from bottles that have been cooking in the sun, ingesting particles that block our arteries and damage our DNA.Who is checking? How frequently? What are they checking for? What happens when bottles are stored improperly? Who inspects the shopkeepers, the transporters, the wedding planners?The public deserves assurance. Not marketing slogans with cricketers’ faces. Not vague promises of quality. Real answers. Real testing. Real accountability. Until then, every sip is a gamble. And Kashmir’s health is the price.
