SRINAGAR, MAY 25 (STC)
: A petition filed by one practising lawyer Raja Chaudhary in the Supreme Court on Sunday is pitching for action against the “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP) and people involved in it for allegedly commercially exploiting the top court’s observations made during the proceedings in a recent case, reports Hindustan Times. The plea has also sought a CBI probe against the CJP activities.
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has reportedly remarked, “Don’t take it so sentimentally.”
The plea said that the formation of the political movement and subsequence trademark appropriation for the party name ‘CJP’ amounts to “selective extraction” and “sensational dissemination” of the top court’s May 15 observation, when Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant referred to youngsters who acquire fake degrees and gain entry into professions and target institutions on social media as “cockroaches”.
The CJI had a day later clarified about the context of his comments not being intended at youngsters but on fake-degree holders, the petition lamented how a digital-political formation such as the CJP has been leveraging on such distorted statements for purposes of gaining publicity, online engagement, merchandise circulation, satire branding, and potential commercial exploitation.
The petitioner has also demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the real concern expressed by the CJI concerning fake advocates, fraudulent law degrees, impersonation within legal practice, and deterioration of professional standards in the legal profession.
Notably, this is the first such petition against CJP which, of late, has gained traction on the social media by appropriating CJI’s “cockroach” remark. The CJP has been started by Abhijeet Dipke, a resident of Boston in the United States.
The plea said, “Selective extraction and sensational dissemination of oral exchanges increasingly distort administration of justice and transform judicial proceedings into media spectacle…”
Meanwhile, when on Monday advocate NK Goswami mentioned his plea against the Cockroach Janta Party before CJI Surya Kant’s bench, and said the satirical movement was tarnishing the image of judiciary, the CJI reportedly remarked, “Don’t take it so sentimentally.”
The bench of the CJI and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and VM Pancholi declined to grant any priority in hearing, saying “there is no such grave urgency” and that the matter would be examined in due course.
