Senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma slams Rahul Gandhi for politicising student unrest

SRINAGAR, JULY 27 (STC): Senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma has accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of attempting to gain political mileage from the recent student protests over the alleged NEET paper leak, claiming that the Centre had already resolved the issue through dialogue.
Reacting to Gandhi’s letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged use of force against protesting students in Delhi, Sharma said the students had withdrawn their agitation after the government accepted their demands.
“The Government of India reached an agreement with the students on their key demands, including compensation, withdrawal of FIRs and other issues. Rahul Gandhi is now trying to create political space for himself despite the matter having been resolved,” Sharma told reporters.
Gandhi, in his letter, had sought accountability for the alleged use of force against students and questioned the government’s handling of the protests.
Sharma also launched a sharp attack on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over its reported demand for the release of around 2,500 people detained following the killing of a police officer in south Kashmir last week.
He alleged that the PDP was attempting to equate detained terror sympathisers with students protesting over academic issues, and accused the party of trying to revive separatist ideology.
“The PDP’s politics has always revolved around separatist thinking. Such attempts to provide space to separatist elements are unacceptable,” Sharma said, adding that the party should be banned for allegedly promoting such an agenda.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Zorawar Singh criticised the National Conference government over the recent controversy surrounding two school textbooks allegedly glorifying separatism.
Drawing a comparison with the Centre’s response to the alleged NEET paper leak, Singh said the Union government had accepted moral responsibility, whereas the Jammu and Kashmir government had failed to act in the textbook controversy.
Questioning Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s silence on the issue, Singh demanded the resignation or removal of Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, alleging that the government was adopting “double standards” on accountability.
