SRINAGAR, JUNE 03 (STC): The people of Jammu and Kashmir have always stood for democracy, peace, and religious harmony, and now urgently need the government’s support to revive the tourism sector, which is facing a serious crisis.
Former minister and senior vice president Apni Party Ghulam Hassan Mir said this while speaking on the occasion of the Kheer Bhawani Mela, a major Hindu festival, where he warmly welcomed the Kashmiri Pandit community. “We believe in Hindu-Muslim unity. We do not want religious division. You can see how Kashmiris are welcoming their Hindu brothers and sisters.”
He said, “ You can see how many came out in the rain, just to show that we support peace and stand against terrorism.”
Pointing to the region’s rich diversity, he said, “Look around — there is a temple, a mosque, and a Gurudwara. This is the real image of Jammu and Kashmir. Unfortunately, a wrong picture is often presented. But the truth is we are hospitable, compassionate people.”
Mir expressed concern over the economic impact of the decline in tourism. “This is a big problem — not just for workers, but also hotel owners, tour guides, and taxi drivers. People have sold land to invest in cars for tourism. Today, they’re unable to repay their bank loans.”
He acknowledged the government’s recent efforts, including the Chief Minister’s cabinet meeting in Gulmarg, but said more concrete action is needed. “You don’t revive tourism just by spending money. What we need are well-organized tourism events at all major destinations to attract visitors and build confidence.”
Appealing to the Centre, he said, “The central government should regularly organize national-level meetings and official events in Kashmir. This creates a positive atmosphere. We’ve seen this before when directions were given to hold such events here.”
He also welcomed the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jammu on June 6 to inaugurate the railway connection to Kashmir. “This is good news. But Kashmir is feeling isolated. The Prime Minister should also visit Kashmir. We need his support and presence here.”
“The people of Kashmir are ready to welcome him with open hearts. The revival of tourism and the local economy requires strong government support. We hope the Prime Minister responds positively,” he said. (STC)
