Government announces 6 free LPG cylinders annually to AAY families; opposition protests

SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 24 (STC): The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved a scheme to provide six free LPG cylinders annually to families covered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY).
This was announced by Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Satish Sharma in the Legislative Assembly.
There was uproar in the House after the government’s announcement. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members. Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma accused the government of promising to provide 12 free LPG cylinders to every household during the elections, but now it has been limited to six cylinders only for AAY families.
He termed it as contrary to the government’s promises and said that the government’s position has become clear to the people. He said limiting even poor families to six cylinders is regrettable.
He also sought an explanation from the government on its election promises of providing one lakh jobs and 200 units of free electricity.
There was a heated debate on both sides in the House. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather tried to restore order in the House, but the ruckus continued for some time.
