SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 17 (STC): Police stations must transform into modern, efficient and citizen-centric institutions to ensure faster and more accessible public services, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Sujit Kumar Singh, at a conference on SMART Policing and Digital Beat Policing held here today.
In line with the vision of the Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, the IGP directed all police stations across Kashmir Zone to adopt SMART Policing and Digital Beat Policing as part of their daily functioning. He emphasised the five principles of SMART Policing: Strict and Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Alert and Accountable, Reliable and Responsive, and Techno-savvy and Trained.
He said the concept must be reflected in the working culture, conduct and public service delivery of every police station rather than remaining confined to policy documents.
On Digital Beat Policing, he directed all SHOs to ensure regular field visits by beat officers, meaningful interaction with local residents and timely redressal of public grievances.
He also stressed the need to maintain updated digital beat records, clearly define responsibilities of beat officers and strengthen supervisory monitoring to ensure transparency and accountability.
Observing that police stations serve as the primary point of contact between the police and the public, the IGP said they must be accessible, responsive and equipped with modern technology.
“Our objective is to make every Police Station in Kashmir Zone SMART and citizen-centric, where technology strengthens accountability and police services reach every citizen with dignity,” he said.
All district police heads were directed to ensure effective implementation of the initiative, with an emphasis on technology-enabled service delivery, community engagement and visible results on the ground.
Notably, the conference was attended by Range DIGs, district SSPs, Additional SSPs, Zonal SSPs, DySPs and Station House Officers (SHOs) from across Kashmir Zone.
