Government contemplating to increase number of PG medical seats

NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 05 (STC): There is a good news for MBBS graduates. Their dream to pursue post graduation (PG) degree and to become specialist doctors brightens. The government is contemplating to increase the number of PG seats. and to fulfil the rising demand, said a source.
If reports appearing a section of media are to be believed, the government is now focusing on increasing postgraduate (PG) medical seats.
Remarkably, the government is going to increase the number of undergraduate (UG) medical seats to approximately 1.2 lakh.
Economic Survey 2024-25 mentions that India is well-placed to achieve WHO recommendation of one doctor per 1,000 population by 2030. The Survey records that at present, there are 13.86 lakh doctors in the country, which translates into a current availability ratio of 1:1263.
“WHO standard norm of 1:1000 seems to be attainable by 2030 with a conservative 50,000 doctors being licensed every year till 2030,” the Survey added.
A Times of India report states that the number of medical colleges increased from 499 in FY 2019 to 648 in 2023 to 780 in FY 2025, during which time MBBS seats increased from 70,012 (2019) to 96,077 (2023) to 1,18,137 (2025), and PG seats from 39,583 (2019) to 64,059 (2023) to 73,157 (2025).
