Eminent Shia Scholar Allama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir Passes Away at 85

His passing is being widely mourned across religious and social circles in Jammu and Kashmir.

: Distinguished Shia Muslim scholar, cleric and religious leader Allama Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi Al-Najfi passed away early on Friday after a brief spell of illness. He was 85.
His death has cast a shadow of grief across Jammu and Kashmir, with leaders and followers expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
Family has announced that the Namaz-e-Janazah of the revered scholar will be held today after Friday prayers at Asthan-e-Alia, his ancestral shrine in Budgam.
Born on March 21, 1940, Allama Baqir began his education at Babul Ilm in Budgam and later pursued higher Islamic studies at the prestigious Howza Ilmia seminary in Najaf Ashraf. He returned to Kashmir in 1982 to continue the spiritual mission of his family, following the path of his ancestor Aga Syed Yusuf Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi.
Allama Baqir was known for his deep scholarship and spiritual insight. He was fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Kashmiri, and contributed as a poet, author, and preacher. His contributions earned him the Shaheed Murtaza Mutahhari Award, recognizing his significant impact on Islamic scholarship.
President of the All Jammu & Kashmir Shia Association, Molvi Imran Reza Ansari, mourned his demise, calling him “a scholar, a guide, and a spiritual light” whose absence leaves a deep void. He described Allama Baqir as a vital link between Najaf’s scholarly traditions and Kashmir’s spiritual life.
People’s Conference Chairman Sajad Lone also extended his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Allama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi Al-Najfi of Budgam. A revered scholar and guide. May Allah SWT elevate his ranks and grant him Jannat al-Firdous (Ameen).”
Allama Moosavi was regarded as a pillar of wisdom and guidance for many in the Shia community and beyond. His teachings and efforts to uphold unity and peace will be remembered with high regard.
