FRIDAY SERMON: Intellect, Planning, Guidance, Destiny, and Trials

The Reality of This World and the Success of the Hereafter

Mohammad younis Bhat (Zahid)

Allah Almighty has blessed human beings with countless favors, but among the greatest of these blessings is “intellect.” Intellect enables a person to think, understand, and distinguish between right and wrong. However, intellect alone is not sufficient. Along with it, a correct understanding of “planning,” “guidance,” “destiny,” and “trials” is also necessary. When all of these come together, a person attains success in both this world and the Hereafter.

The Importance of Intellect

The Noble Qur’an repeatedly calls people toward reflection and deep thinking.

“Will you not then use reason?”
Qur’an (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:44)

Allah granted human beings intellect so that they may recognize the truth, reflect upon His signs, and follow the straight path. Intellect gives a person the ability to make decisions, but if intellect becomes separated from divine revelation and faith, it can also lead a person astray.

Today humanity has advanced greatly in knowledge and technology, yet without divine guidance these advancements can become a cause of corruption and harm. Therefore, intellect must always remain connected to the guidance of Allah.

The Importance of Planning and Effort

Islam is not only a religion of trust in Allah; it is also a religion of planning, effort, and action. Human beings are commanded to strive, make proper plans, and fulfill their responsibilities.

Allah Almighty says:

“And that man shall have nothing except what he strives for.”
— Qur’an (Surah An-Najm 53:39)

Muhammad ( peace be upon him) demonstrated the finest examples of planning in every situation. During the migration (Hijrah), he carefully prepared the journey, stayed in the Cave of Thawr, and took every necessary means, while his heart remained fully reliant upon Allah.

A famous hadith states:

“Tie your camel first, then place your trust in Allah.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi

This teaches us that taking practical measures is also part of faith.

The Need for Divine Guidance

Despite possessing intellect and planning, human beings still remain in need of guidance, because only Allah can show the correct path.

In every prayer, Muslims recite:

“Guide us to the straight path.”
Qur’an (Surah Al-Fatihah 1:6)

Guidance is the light of the heart. It protects a person from arrogance, injustice, and sin. Many people may possess intelligence and power, yet without guidance they fall into misguidance, while a simple person who receives Allah’s guidance may attain great honor and success.

The Correct Understanding of Destiny

Belief in destiny is one of the fundamental beliefs of Islam. A Muslim believes that everything happens according to the knowledge and will of Allah Almighty.

However, destiny does not mean that a person should abandon effort. Islam teaches that a person should use intellect, adopt the best strategies, follow divine guidance, and then leave the results to Allah.

Allah Almighty says:

“Say: Nothing will ever happen to us except what Allah has decreed for us.”
— Qur’an (Surah At-Tawbah 9:51)

This verse teaches patience, certainty, and trust in Allah.

The Difference Between Trials and Punishment

Not every hardship in life is the same. Sometimes trials come to elevate the ranks of righteous people, while at other times hardships may serve as warnings or punishments for wrongdoing.

Allah tests His righteous servants in order to reveal their faith, patience, and sincerity.

The Qur’an states:

“And We will surely test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits; but give glad tidings to the patient.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:155)

Muhammad ( peace be upon him) Said:

“The people most severely tested are the Prophets, then those nearest to them.”
Sunan al-Tirmidhi

This shows that trials are not always punishments. Often they are signs of Allah’s love, through which a believer grows closer to Him through patience and perseverance.

However, when a person continuously persists in sin, oppression, and disobedience, hardships may become a warning or punishment.

Therefore, a believer should always reflect upon himself, repent, remain patient, and turn back to Allah in every situation.

The Reality of This World and Preparation for the Hereafter

This worldly life is temporary, while the Hereafter is eternal. Human beings have come into this world as travelers and will one day return to their Lord.

Allah Almighty says in Qur’an:

“But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and everlasting.”
— (Surah Al-A‘la 87:16–17)

People run after wealth, fame, and worldly comforts, yet true success lies in the Hereafter. Every joy of this world is temporary, while the blessings of the Hereafter are everlasting.

Therefore, true wisdom demands that a person prepare for the Hereafter while living in this world: to perform righteous deeds with proper effort, follow divine guidance, believe in destiny, and remain patient during trials.

The Relationship Between These Concepts

Intellect gives a person the ability to think

Planning leads a person toward action and effort

Guidance shows the correct path

Destiny creates trust and reliance upon Allah

Trials strengthen faith

Belief in the Hereafter helps a person understand the reality of this world

When a person understands all of these correctly, he neither becomes arrogant in success nor hopeless in hardship. Instead, he remains content with the will of Allah in every condition.

Conclusion

A truly successful believer is one who thinks with intellect, acts with wisdom and planning, follows divine guidance, believes firmly in destiny, remains patient through trials, and makes preparation for the Hereafter the ultimate purpose of life.

Today, the Muslim Ummah is in great need of this balance. When a person adopts these principles in life, he attains peace in this world, contentment in the heart, and success in the Hereafter.

May Allah Almighty bless us with sound intellect, wise planning, complete guidance, firm faith in destiny, patience during trials, and the best preparation for the Hereafter. Ameen.

And Allah knows best
