STC NEWS MONITORING DESK
NEW DELHI, JUNE 19 (STC): The time has come to make the criminal justice system a suitable means for every citizen of the country to obtain the rights given by the Constitution, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah while
addressing the 26th All India Fingerprint Conference 2026 in here today.
He said that this system of the country is passing through a phase of transformation and has been systematically updated to meet contemporary needs.
Talking about National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), Shah said, there are numerous such cases where this system has been of great help in simplifying even the most complex cases. He noted that NAFIS is currently being utilized at only 10 per cent of its capacity and argued that its application should extend beyond merely tracking down criminals.
The Home Minister emphasized that NAFIS’s success depends entirely on enriching its database with fingerprints collected from every crime scene. Describing it as a two-way system, he noted that while NAFIS is highly effective at identifying perpetrators, it can only be successful when comprehensive data is consistently generated. He emphasized the need to effectively integrate technology across every stage of the legal process – from investigation and prosecution to final conviction.
