SRINAGAR, APRIL 19 (STC): The Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered an FIR after recovering a satellite GPS device from two US nationals at Srinagar International Airport, officials said on Sunday.
The duo, identified as Jeffrey Scott Prather, a resident of Montana, USA, and Haldar Koushik, originally from Kolkata but currently settled in the United States were scheduled to travel to Delhi on Air India flight AI1893.
Officials said that the two were intercepted during routine security checks, following which a satellite GPS device (made in Taiwan) was recovered from their handbag. They were subsequently deboarded, and the device was seized.
A top official confirmed that a case under FIR No. 96/2026 dated April 19, 2026, has been registered by Budgam Police under Section 43(3)(f) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and further investigation has been initiated.
The section pertains to the unauthorised possession or use of prohibited communication devices, including satellite-based equipment, in violation of lawful restrictions imposed by authorities. It is invoked in cases involving possession or use of such devices without prior permission.
The provision empowers law enforcement agencies to register an offence, seize the equipment, and investigate to determine intent and usage.
Sources said the travel history of the duo within the country is being examined, while agencies are questioning them to ascertain the purpose of carrying the device. The use of such satellite-enabled equipment is strictly regulated in Jammu and Kashmir without prior authorization.
