Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s first hydrogen-powered train, connecting Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. The indigenously built 10-coach train generates onboard electricity using hydrogen fuel cells, producing zero tailpipe emissions and carrying up to 2,600 passengers.
The deployment of the hydrogen train marks a massive step in the decarbonization of the Indian Railways network, placing India in an elite group of countries—including Germany and Japan—that have successfully deployed zero-emission hydrogen rail tech.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered train is a major success of the “Make in India” campaign. He termed the project as a major success of the “Make in India” campaign and said that India has crossed a historic milestone in the field of clean, eco-friendly and modern railway technology. He said that with the launch of this train, India has joined the ranks of the few countries where hydrogen-powered trains are regularly operational.
“Today, Indian Railways has taken a big step. This hydrogen train running between Jind and Sonipat is the most powerful hydrogen train in the world and it is a shining example of the success of the Make in India campaign,” Prime Minister Modi said and further stated that the country is constantly moving towards modern and environment-friendly technology and hydrogen energy will play an important role in meeting the needs of the future.
